Taxonomic Status of the Cuban Vampire Bat (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae: Desmodontinae: Desmodus)

چکیده
—The Cuban subspecies of vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus puntajudensis Woloszyn and Mayo, is redescribed and raised to the specific rank. Desmodus puntajudensis shares some cranial characters with two extinct species of vampire bats from North America, D. stocki and D. archaeodaptes. Characters that distinguish the Cuban species are skull with globose braincase, palate wide with posterior apex widely grooved at midline, zygomatic arch short and higher anteriorly, orbital region deeply excavated, pterygoid process reduced, paraoccipital process reduced and ventrally placed, occipital protuberance greatly projected, occiput high and facing postero-ventrally, and foramen magnum larger antero-posteriorly. An additional, nearly complete skull of D. puntajudensis is recorded from a Quaternary cave deposit at Cueva de Paredones, La Habana, Cuba, which represents the westernmost fossil locality for its paleodistribution in the Cuban

متن کاملAdult Vampire Bats Produce Contact Calls When Isolated: Acoustic Variation by Species, Population, Colony, and Individual
BACKGROUND Bat pups produce individually distinct isolation calls to facilitate maternal recognition. Increasing evidence suggests that, in group-living bat species, adults often use similar calls to maintain contact. We investigated if isolated adults from all three species of the highly cooperative vampire bats (Phyllostomidae: Desmodontinae) would produce vocally distinct contact calls when ...
متن کاملDescriptive ecology of bat flies (Diptera: Hippoboscoidea) associated with vampire bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) in the cerrado of Central Brazil.
We studied the ectoparasitic bat flies of three phyllostomid vampire bat species. Bats were collected monthly from April 2004-March 2005 in caves within the Cafuringa Environmental Protection Area in the Federal District of Brazil. A total of 1,259 specimens from six species in the Streblidae family were collected from 332 bats. High host affinity from the sampled bat fly species and high preva...
متن کاملSeasonal variation and food deprivation in common vampire bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae).
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of seasonal variation and fasting on fat reserves of the common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus. Plasma free fatty acids (FFA), along with lipid content of the liver and muscles, and fatty acids from the carcass were obtained from bats fed bovine blood and from whom food was subsequently withheld for 24 and 48 h. Animals were caught during both...
متن کاملHearing in American leaf-nosed bats. IV: the Common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus.
We behaviorally determined the audiograms of three Common vampire bats (Phyllostomidae, Desmodus rotundus), a species specialized to exist exclusively on blood. The bats were trained to respond to pure tones in a conditioned suppression/avoidance procedure for a blood reward and a mild punisher for failures to detect the tones. Common vampire bats have a hearing range from 716 Hz to 113 kHz at ...
